چکیده

This paper addresses the unfairness problem appearing in 802.6-based DQDB MANs. Traffic load demand is characterized as low (below 0.4 of the channel capacity), normal (from 0.4 to 0.9 of the channel capacity) or heavy (greater than 0.9 of the channel capacity). At low loads the 802.6 protocol is acceptably fair. At normal loads, however, the protocol performance is markedly unfair. The unfairness is related to the latency in transporting a request. At heavy loads the unfairness is both latency-related and flooding-related. In this paper, both types of unfairness are carefully analyzed. As a control measure, a 3-Tier Structured Access protocol is proposed. At low loads the 802.6 performance is retained. For normal loads, extra slots are allowed based on predicted demand. At heavy loads access protection is applied. A Dynamic Assessment of Network Topology (DANT) protocol is also presented. The DANT dynamically maintains the additional information required for the implementation of the 3-tier structure. The proposed fair access protocol is studied under different load types and traffic demand. A tuning scheme is proposed... Read complete abstract on page 2.

An Access Protection Solution For Heavy Load Unfairness in DQDB

This paper discusses the unfairness issue arising in a 802.6 DQDB network at high loads-when the traffic demand to a bus exceeds the capacity of that bus. As per the 802.6 protocol, at heavy loads, the end nodes along a bus experience longer delays than the other nodes. The origin and remedy of this heavy load unfairness is discussed. An access control scheme is proposed as a solution. The comp...

Simulation Study of WWW Traffic over a DQDB Network

We present a simulation study of WWW traac over a realistic DQDB network running the TCP/IP protocol stack. All network and protocol elements have been implemented in detail. A large scale DQDB network with 12 nodes and 24 access units is studied. QoS parameters of 552 TCP connections between end users are analyzed. The average frame length in our traac source model has been chosen according to...

Incorporating Continuation-of-Message Information, Slot Reuse, and Fairness in DQDB Networks

Several important modifications to the distributed queue dual bus (DQDB) (IEEE 802.6) protocol for metropolitan area networks (MANs) are proposed. These modifications are aimed at improving not only the throughput and delay performance of the network but also its fairness performance. The first proposal exploits the continuation-of-message (COM) information in a DQDB segment in order to minimiz...

Demand and service matching at heavy loads: a dynamic bandwidth control mechanism for DQDB MANs

In this paper, the Alpha Tuning Mechanism for distributed queue dual bus (DQDB) networks is proposed. This mechanism achieves a match between the users’ demand and the resulting protocol’s service patterns. The use of a tunable a-parameter (representing some fictitious user population) and access protection lead to dynamic bandwidth control capability. The inherently position dependent fairness...

Classification of fairness measures for local and metropolitan area networks

As appeared in Computer Communications WW lodek Dobosiewicz Pawee l Gburzy nski y Vincent Maciejewski z present a model for measuring the fairness in LANs and MANs. Abstract Fairness of very high-speed networks became a focus of interest since the moment Distributed Queue Dual Bus (dqdb) gained popularity. Several papers exposed its unfairness; at the same time, many researchers argued that thi...
